[Recovery Art Day] Reclaiming Selfhood: A Journey of Resilience

06/03/2026

From Service Users to Committee Leaders

The defining feature of this year’s event was its leadership structure. Moving away from traditional hospital-led initiatives, the entire organization was spearheaded by a committee of individuals in recovery at Tai Po Hospital.

Supported by occupational therapists, the committee managed complex responsibilities including:

Creative Direction: Members conceptualized the event’s theme and visual identity, ensuring their recovery narratives were woven into every design element.

Operations Management: They coordinated stall logistics, pricing strategies, and the overall event flow with professional precision.

"Recovery" does not mean returning to a pre-illness state. Instead, it is about empowering individuals to embrace their history while reshaping their future. By engaging in art, individuals move from "telling" their story to "doing" a task, and finally to "living" a purposeful life once more.

Art as a Bridge Between Worlds

The diverse range of items—from expressive paintings to hand-crafted ceramics—served as a bridge where language sometimes fails. Each piece represented a moment of intense focus, helping the creator transcend the shadows of illness. For many, the act of choosing a color or shaping clay became a metaphor for redesigning their own lives and futures.

Recognition and Social Impact

The event received overwhelming praise from the public and hospital staff alike. Visitors were deeply moved not just by the quality of the art, but by the professionalism and passion of the organizing committee. This client-led model has significantly contributed to destigmatization, demonstrating that with the right support, individuals in recovery are talented, capable, and vital contributors to society.
